The NJ EHDI Program is pleased to announce open registration for the second presentation of our 2012 Pediatric Hearing Healthcare Teleconference Series, to be held on Tuesday, June 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This presentation is entitled:
"Help Us Help Them—Connecting Audiologists with the Consultants on Hearing Loss to Better Serve Families"
Presented by New Jersey Early Intervention Consultants on Hearing Loss:
Barbara Hayes, TOD, MEd., LSLS Cert. AVEd. and Theresa Dodd, M.A., CCC-SLP
SUMMARY: Ms. Hayes and Ms. Dodd will be covering the following topics in their teleconference presentation:
- Role of NJ Early Intervention Consultants on Hearing Loss
- Rationale for having and utilizing the consultants
- Content and topics consultants plan to discuss with families—handouts and binder information
- Review of information consultants plan to provide to families
- Overview of Early Intervention process and referrals, incl. presumptive eligibility
- Objectives and goals in partnering with audiologists—what we think we need for our ongoing working relationship
- Questions and Answers
Barbara Hayes is a teacher of the deaf, currently teaching in a full-day preschool class in a program for the deaf and hard of hearing for Bergen County Special Services in New Jersey. She works with the children in the classroom, serves families through the parent educational program and provides early intervention to families both in home- and center-based settings.
Barbara graduated from Tufts University with degrees in Early Childhood Developmental Psychology and Education with a minor in Mental Health. She received her master's degree as a teacher of the deaf from Western Maryland College in 1982. She has worked in a variety of settings and states including Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey in private schools, public schools and state school settings. She has focused on early childhood, teaching children birth through 6 years of age. She received her LSLS Cert. AVEd. in 2008. She has taught in a multitude of settings including an ASL setting, total communication settings and auditory/oral Settings. Barbara is a member of AG Bell and serves on the Academy certification committee as well as the mentorship committee. In 2009, she represented AG Bell at the Virginia DOE conference speaking on a variety of topics including LSLS strategies in the classroom and the ramifications of late onset diagnosis regarding language development. She is a mentor for current Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS™) candidates.
Theresa Dodd is a speech-language pathologist currently providing early intervention for the deaf and hard of hearing and their families. Theresa is employed full-time with Mountain Lakes Early Intervention Program, where she serves children who attend the full-time Ivy Nursery Program for children with hearing loss, as well as provides home-based early intervention sessions. She is also employed with Summit Speech School's early intervention program. She is experienced in providing speech therapy using both a total communication and a listening and spoken language approach.
Theresa completed her bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology at Loyola University in Maryland before moving to Washington, D.C. to earn her master's in speech and hearing science at George Washington University. During her time at George Washington, she completed the Cochlear Implant Fellowship at the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where she worked for the Listening and Spoken Language certification program. Theresa remained in the Washington, D.C. area and worked as a speech-language pathologist in a private practice for children with hearing loss. During that time, she provided home-based early intervention services as well as center-based sessions for the deaf and hard of hearing and their families using listening and spoken language.

Please note that NJ EHDI will not accept a group email registration - an email sent by one audiologist on behalf of their work colleagues will not be not be accepted as individual email addresses are necessary for continuing education documentation.

The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing Position Statement. The committee, with representatives from a range of disciplines and organizations, and representation from the American Academy of Audiology by Alison Grimes and Christine Yoshinaga-Itano, has produced this best-practices, evidence-based guideline on newborn hearing screening, audiologic and medical diagnosis and audiologic, medical and educational management (Early Intervention), for the infant with hearing loss or deafness.
